Cougar Takes the Hindmost Race

This event will take place Sunday May 10, 2026 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Burnet Woods by the bandstand. Enter the park from Clifton Avenue and park near the bandstand. There will be a 5K option for adults and 1 mile option for kids. If multiple people from your family will participate, please fill out a form for each participant. Here's how the race works:

There will be a 200 meter lap marked by cones. For the 5K race, up to 25 participants will start racing around the lap. Whoever is in last place by the end of the second lap will be eliminated by "The Cougar." With each sequential lap, the last runner to complete the lap will be eliminated. The first and second place runners will be the only ones to complete the whole 5K, and whoever crosses the finish line first, wins. There will be a small prize for the winner. One last rule: no lapping.

The rules will be the same for the kids' one mile race. There will be 8 kids per one mile race and they will begin to be eliminated after the second lap. We will have multiple mile races for kids, depending on how many kids participate.

We will have a little concession stand with snacks, with all proceeds going to the CANS cross country team. The bathrooms at the bandstand will be open.

This event is a fundraiser for the CANS cross country team and will provide scholarships so that cost will not be a barrier for any students who want to run this coming fall. The program we participate in is Cross Country for Youth. Suggested donation is $20 for adults and $10 for kids but please don't let this be a barrier to participating. 100% of the funds raised will go to CANS student scholarships. CANS participated with Cross Country for Youth the last two years and we are looking forward to another great season this coming fall. Thank you for supporting our team!
