Field Day Volunteers Needed

CANS students look forward to Field Day all year! This is a huge lift and requires a lot of volunteers to create a memorable, safe experience for our students!

Please log in to your account at canselementary.org to sign up for morning, lunchtime, and/or afternoon shifts for grades K-5th or contact Bree Shaftel, PTO Volunteer Coordinator, at bree.lehman@gmail.com or 646.477.7318. Sign-ups will close the evening of Monday, May 22nd.

PreK is holding its own, shorter Field Day from 9:40-10:40. Please contact Nasra Woods at nasra.mesmer@gmail.com to volunteer with PreK.

Volunteers of the Month

Please join us in thanking our May Volunteers of the Month, Margaret Lange and Meera Murthi!

Meera has devoted SO many hours this year to helping out during both Makerspace Mondays and recess. Thank you for always being a friendly and welcoming member of the CANS community and for making time for our students!

Margaret was a co-leader for our very successful Trunk or Treat event this past fall. She has also used her expertise in graphic design to advise the PTO on many projects big and small, solving tricky problems on tight deadlines.

After School Programming Survey

We are already thinking about after-school programming for next school year and would love to hear what went well this year and what can be improved upon. Are you excited about leading or volunteering in an activity for our CANS students?! Please provide your feedback and ideas through the CANS After School Evaluation 2023-24 (google.com) or reach out to Julia Bonfield at jbonfield@costars.org.

Save the Date - 2023-2024 Back-to-School Bash!

Please plan to join us on the afternoon of Saturday, August 12th, for our Back-to-School Bash on the CANS campus! We are already looking forward to reuniting with our school community to kick off an exciting new school year! More details to come! Do you know a family that will be new to CANS in the fall? Please encourage them to visit canselementary.org to create an account, sign up for the PTO’s emailed newsletter, and connect with us via Facebook.

Teacher Appreciation Week Wrap-Up

CANS teachers are relentless and resilient, and we are so grateful to them for leading our school to academic excellence and leading our children to be true to the CREW philosophy. To celebrate CANS teachers and staff during National Teacher Appreciation Week (May 8th - 12th), the PTO organized a week-long schedule of festivities including a breakfast spread with donuts and coffee, an afternoon snack buffet, a self-care item giveaway, and a catered lunch from Chipotle. Thanks to everyone who also sent in their students with cards, letters, and works of art! We love our teachers!

DEI Initiatives 2023-2024

CANS PTO and LSDMC have been discussing ways to improve equity and inclusion throughout our school, and we want to hear from you! What activities, sports, methods of communication, special events, or celebrations would make your family feel included in our school community? Would you like to be involved in these ongoing conversations? We would love to hear from you over the summer. Please email us at canspto@gmail.com
